CADET ORIENTATION FLIGHTS
Are you ready to go flying? All cadets are entitled to five Powered Orientation flights, five Glider Orientation flights and five Balloon Orientation flights over their career as a cadet, during which they sit in the right front seat and take the controls under the watchful eye of a qualified CAP pilot. Before you can fly you must complete the Aircraft Ground Handling course in Absorb and you should complete the Air Crew Professionalism course as well.
Orientation Flights will be scheduled for the second Saturday of the month to run concurrently with Young Eagles flights. Contact 2nd Lt Schumacher to schedule your flight today!
Local Volunteer Opportunity – KidZone Museum 9/28/2024
KidZone Museum is in search of volunteers for the yearly Family Farm Festival on September 28th from 9:00am-1:00pm. They need help with set-up, arts & crafts, face painting, bulb planting, petting zoo supervision, games, and clean up. Please consider signing up to help support a local non-profit and make this event a success while earning community service hours. Contact 2d Lt. Schumacher for more information.

UPCOMING EVENTS
Nevada Wing is requiring us to participate in Wing SAR training on specific dates, some of which may conflict with other activities we had planned to hold on our own schedule. Find more details at the end of this section.
September 5 – Crane Building Competition
Cadets and Senior Members, this is a chance to show off your prowess at building a crane from recyclable materials. Entries will face off (or maybe lift off) against one another and then each entrant will discuss what worked for them what didn’t work, and what they learned. The cadet team or individual entry that lifts the most weight will be awarded a prize. The best entry by a senior member will win bragging rights.
September 7 – Wing SAREX
We have Wing funding for one flight, but we may self-fund another flight if there’s air crew interest or we may do a second tabletop exercise. We can also use help with mission base tasks, especially communications. Cadets are encouraged to participate, just make sure you have completed GES 116. The priority for air crew seats is anyone needing to renew (highest), trainees (second highest), and then anyone else who is qualified. Everyone must sign up ahead of time by contacting SM Jack Ellis. The sign-up deadline for cadets is September 1 and the sign-up deadline for Senior members is September 3.

September 14 – EAA Pancake Breakfast - Young Eagles – Cadet Orientation Rides
CAP Cadet Orientation Flights will start at 8 AM for those who sign up.
At the same time the EAA Pancake Breakfast and Flying Rallye will start. There will also be several STEM activities to gauge interest in a larger program.
EAA needs adults to help in the kitchen, and cadets and senior members to help Young Eagles with the simulators and the STEM activities. Please contact Lt Maggie Schumacher if you can help in the kitchen or are interested in helping with the Jaybirds and the STEM activities.

September 14 – Aircraft Wash Party
We’re required to wash the T206 we’ve been assigned twice a year. In the past we’ve paid an outside firm hundreds of hard earned fundraising dollars to detail the airplane in August. This year we’re going to do it ourselves on September 14th right after the EAA Breakfast. Pilots are expected to help. Cadets and other aircrew members are encouraged to help. We should be finished in under two hours and lunch will be provided once we’re done. The Squadron will provide any cleaning materials, including degreasers, rags and creepers to get underneath the airplane. More details will be forthcoming shortly.
September 28th – Open House, Recruiting Event and Squadron Barbecue
We will hold a combined Open House and Recruiting event at the EAA building that allows families, friends and prospective members to learn more about what we do and get a behind-the-scenes look at our Emergency Services operation. Our airplane will be on display, we’ll have the J-Bird simulators running, we’ll offer tours of the mission base operation, and we’ll provide food.
October 4-6 – Reno Air Show
Reno Squadron needs help for the upcoming Reno Air Show. You can sign up on their squadron web site at Reno Air Show — RENO COMPOSITE SQUADRON. If enough seniors and cadets sign up, we may be able arrange transportation for you up and back.
October 12 – Wing SAREX
This will be a tabletop exercise, which means no flying, ground or sUAS activity. You do not need an ES qualification to participate but you do need GES 116 and you must sign up no later than September 29th so we can plan accordingly.
November 9 – Wing Ground and sUAS SAREX
If the weather cooperates, we will fly either a Wing-paid or Squadron-funded exercise. If the weather does not cooperate we will conduct a tabletop exercise that uses the mission base radio, the airplane radio and the vehicle radio. You do not need an ES qualification to participate but you do need GES 116 and you must sign up no later than September 29th so we can plan accordingly.

TRAINING SEMINARS
Unless otherwise noted, these events are posted on the Reno Squadron’s website. The folks in Reno generally want you to sign up so they can arrange the space and plan for lunch. Some classes are broadcast via Microsoft Teams and recordings may be available, but it’s better to be there in person if you can.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS
Mission to Mars Space Camps
Our squadron provides guest lecturers for these camps, which are sponsored by the EAA and aimed at 8 to 12-year-olds. Lt Col Ken Aronson and his wife, 2nd Lt Rolann Aronson, are the principal lecturers. Senior members and cadets can help with logistics and training. Many of our cadets are graduates of this program and a few have attended more than once. This year, there are still two more camps:
