Cadet and Cadet Parent Surveys

We’re planning for the upcoming year that starts on October 1. We need input from cadets and their parents so we can set an activity agenda that focuses on cadet wants and needs.  We want to know what’s working, what isn’t, what we’re doing well and where we need to improve.  Please take the time to help us by filling out the cadet survey or the cadet parent survey.  Responses are anonymous by default but if you are willing to have us contact you, please put your name in one of the boxes that asks for a text response.

Local Volunteer Opportunity – KidZone Museum 9/28/2024

KidZone Museum is in search of volunteers for the yearly Family Farm Festival on September 28th from 9:00am-1:00pm.  They need help with set-up, arts & crafts, face painting, bulb planting, petting zoo supervision, games, and clean up.  Please consider signing up to help support a local non-profit and make this event a success while earning community service hours. Contact 2d Lt. Schumacher for more information.

Basic Cadet School / Non-Commissioned Officer School

There are out of area opportunities for BCS and NCOS.  We are hoping that these schools will be offered in Northern Nevada in the coming year.  Please be aware that transportation will not be provided for the opportunities listed below;

NVWG – BCS: Las Vegas

  • Nevada Wing will be hosting a Basic Cadet School on 27-29 September in Las Vegas, NV.

SQUADRON WEEK IN REVIEW

New Members

Promotions, Appointments and Key Accomplishments

Please congratulate the following cadets:

Jodi Anselmi for achieving his Curry Award (Achievement 1)

John Schumacher for promoting to Achievement 8

Squadron Events

On Tuesday members of our squadron with Mission Pilot, Mission Observer and Airborne Photographer qualifications received an alert for missions on September 6 and 8th.  Three of us (Capt Beadle, Maj McNear and SM Ellis) were selected to fly a photo mission on September 6 along with squadrons from all over the Western US as part of an exercise to test coordination among wings in the Pacific Coast (PCR) and Rocky Mountain regions.  The flying was unusually challenging, but we got some good photos and much needed experience.

We had a very successful squadron-led SAREX on September 7.  Six cadets (Anselmi, D. Cohen, Noble, Ridgel, J. Schumacher and R. Schumacher) made progress toward their Mission Staff Assistant (MSA) and Mission Radio Operator MRO) qualifications.  Senior members Supan and Wessbecher got both of their qualification flights for Mission Scanner and Capt Beadle and 2d Lt Schumacher got their MSA qualifications.  Maj McNear and senior members Ellis, Eyre and Smith helped with flying and mission base activities.  Our thanks to Capt Joe Nishikida from the Reno Squadron, who came up to act as MRO and MSA trainer for the day, and Lt Col Shyle Irigoin from Minden, who acted as Incident Commander.

Squadron Positions Needed (Primary & Support)

  • Transportation / Drivers (critical for support of cadet programs and cadet opportunities)

  • Ground Team Leader

  • IT / Website Maintenance / Cyber Security

  • Personnel

  • Public Affairs / Community Outreach

If you have interest in leading or supporting any of these positions, please reach out to Capt Dan Beadle.

Parents, there are many ways that you can support, as a parent, a cadet sponsor, or by becoming a member!

Notices

If you hold a current Emergency Services qualification you are on the Nevada Wing alerting system call list.  This includes cadets who hold MRO and MSA quals.  If you receive an alert via text, voice or e-mail, please respond with “yes” if you are able to help, or “no” if you aren’t available.  Please do NOT ignore the alert.  Since we’re all volunteers it is perfectly acceptable to decline, but as CAP members we should offer the courtesy of a reply.

Lt Col Goertzen and Capt Dustin Surwill have created a set of tools for cadets and senior members that you’ll find very helpful, including dashboards for cadet achievements, ES qualification renewal deadlines, O-Ride status for cadets, and promotions.  Point your web browser here and check it out.  You’ll need to log in using your CAP e-mail address and password.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Please contact SM Ellis if you plan to attend and let him know what you would like to accomplish so we can ensure all needed resources are available.

September 14 – EAA Pancake Breakfast - Young Eagles – Cadet Orientation Rides

CAP Cadet Orientation Flights will start at 8 AM for those who sign up.

At the same time the EAA Pancake Breakfast and Flying Rallye will start.  There will also be several STEM activities to gauge interest in a larger program.

September 14 – Aircraft Wash Party

We’re required to wash the T206 we’ve been assigned twice a year. In the past we’ve paid an outside firm hundreds of hard earned fundraising dollars to detail the airplane in August.  This year we’re going to do it ourselves on September 14th right after the EAA Breakfast.  Pilots are expected to help.  Cadets and other aircrew members are encouraged to help.  We should be finished in under two hours and lunch will be provided.  The Squadron will provide any cleaning materials, including degreasers, rags, ladders, safety equipment and creepers to get underneath the airplane.  Wear clothes you won’t mind getting oil and grease on.

Please sign up by September 12th so we know how much Raley’s pizza to order:

https://form.jotform.com/242515317987162

September 28th – Open House, Recruiting Event and Squadron Barbecue

We will hold a combined Open House and Recruiting event at the EAA building that allows families, friends and prospective members to learn more about what we do and get a behind-the-scenes look at our Emergency Services operation.  Our airplane will be on display, we’ll have the J-Bird simulators running, we’ll offer tours of the mission base operation, and we’ll provide food.

October 4-6 – Reno Air Show

Cadets – The Reno Air Show Ticketing Team is looking for volunteers (ages 14+) to volunteer.  This is a great opportunity to support the event and be able to enjoy the event after your shift.  Please complete the interest form with your availability;

https://form.jotform.com/242521254770149

Senior Members - Reno Squadron needs help for the upcoming Reno Air Show.  You can sign up on their squadron web site at Reno Air Show — RENO COMPOSITE SQUADRON.  If enough seniors and cadets sign up, we may be able arrange transportation for you up and back.

October 12 – Wing SAREX

This will be a tabletop exercise, which means no flying, ground or sUAS activity.   You do not need an ES qualification to participate but you do need GES 116 and everyone (cadets and seniors) must sign up no later than October 4th so we can plan accordingly.  Cadets and senior members, if you are interested in helping out with planning, contact SM Ellis.

November 9 – Wing Ground and sUAS SAREX

We will conduct a tabletop exercise that uses the mission base radio, the airplane radio and the vehicle radio.   You do not need an ES qualification to participate but you do need GES 116 and you must sign up no later than November 1st so we can plan accordingly.

TRAINING SEMINARS

Unless otherwise noted, these events are posted on the Reno Squadron’s website.  The folks in Reno generally want you to sign up so they can arrange the space and plan for lunch.  Some classes are broadcast via Microsoft Teams and recordings may be available, but it’s better to be there in person if you can.

WMIRS Training – Tentatively November 16

All seniors and cadets who have or are working toward any Emergency Services qualification need to know how to navigate CAP’s Web Information and Reporting System, or WMIRS.  If we can reserve the Truckee Airport’s big meeting room and line up AV equipment we may offer an online option so other squadrons can participate but you’ll get the most out of this class by attending in person.

Mission to Mars Space Camps

Our squadron provides guest lecturers for these camps, which are sponsored by the EAA and aimed at 8 to 12-year-olds.  Lt Col Ken Aronson and his wife, 2nd Lt Rolann Aronson, are the principal lecturers.  Senior members and cadets can help with logistics and training.  Many of our cadets are graduates of this program and a few have attended more than once.  This year, there are still two more camps:

  • Fall Space Camp on Saturdays only September 28, October 5, 12, 19 and 26

Contact Lt Col Aronson at kirmas4530@gmail.com if you can help out.
